Policeman Killed, 11 Others Missing as Gunmen Unleash Terror in Benue
At least one Nigerian police officer was killed and 11 others missing after gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in Benue State Sunday night.
The police team was reportedly on a trip from Anyibe to Ayilamo, both in Logo Local Government Area, when gunmen descended on them Sunday night.
A resident of Ayilamo, who spoke to Premium Times, said: “The second policeman was lucky to escape the gunshots.”
Locals added that some officers who responded to the attack and tried to go after the killers ran into a waiting ambush.
“Eleven officers are missing this night,” a resident said. “These killers should be immediately declared a terrorist group now.”
Another resident said the remains of the officer had been deposited at a local government hospital in Ayilamo, adding that at least one police truck was set alight in the attack.
This is the latest onslaught in a week of deadly attacks that had left scores killed in Benue, including about 45 people on Wednesday.
No fewer than 15 police officers have been killed in Benue alone this year, in a wave of attacks that has seen about 1,000 people killed across the region this year.
President Muhammadu Buhari and the security chiefs have come under severe criticism over the devastating attacks in the Niger-Benue trough, with the killer herdsmen going about their nefarious activities unchecked.
